Dr. Chetan Sesahdri and Dr. Galit Alter (MGH) are senior authors of “IFN-γ-independent immune markers of Mycobacterium tuberculosis exposure,” published in Nature Medicine. In their study, a cohort of Ugandan individuals who were household contacts of patients with TB tested negative for Mtb infection using standard clinical tests such as the tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assay. To investigate whether these individuals were "resisters" to TB, the Sesahdri and Alter Labs discovered that these individuals exhibited a specific immunological profile similar to those with Mtb exposure but with unique antibody responses. The study reveals a distinctive adaptive immune profile among TB-exposed subjects, supporting an expanded definition of the host response to TB exposure, and highlights the need to improve current clinical diagnosis.
