Dr. Chase Cannon, 3rd year Senior Fellow, is working with mentor Dr. Matthew Golden and Public Health-Seattle King County’s Sexual Health Clinic to rethink how to continue safely providing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to over 750 patients locally. Typically patients undergo blood testing and extragenital STI screening every 3 months, but routine clinical visits have drastically decreased with social distancing mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. His study, HOT4PrEP (Home Option Testing 4 PrEP), will examine patients’ ability to obtain their own blood samples from the upper arm using local biotech startup company Tasso, Inc.’s novel collection device and evaluate the accuracy of results from these samples. Washington’s Department of Health is interested in providing sample collection kits to PrEP patients at home and Dr. Cannon is developing a program to meet this need for remote testing and monitoring through his study. Online recruitment for Sexual Health Clinic patients begins in late May 2020.
