Dr. Christine Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, and is the Associate Medical Director of the University of Washington Virology Research Clinic. She accepts this Hometown Heroes Award on behalf of the University of Washington Virology Research Clinic, which has been doing clinical research to understand viral infections for over 40 years. When the pandemic began, the clinic sprang into action, and has conducted multiple clinical trials of new medications and vaccines to treat and prevent COVID-19, with funding from NIH and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The clinic has enrolled hundreds of participants and the clinic staff has worked tirelessly to conduct high-quality research throughout the pandemic. The UW-VRC continues to enroll participants in clinical trials of novel vaccine and treatment strategies for COVID-19 and other viral infections.
