research interests

Dr. Buckner's research concentrates on drug discovery for diseases caused by pathogenic protozoa and bacteria. These include Trypanosoma cruzi (the cause of Chagas disease), Trypanosoma brucei (the cause of African sleeping sickness), Leishmania species (the cause of leishmaniasis), Cryptosporidium (a cause of diarrhea), and MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus). The lab works closely with chemistry groups that synthesize new compounds with antimicrobial properties.  The lab works on various biochemical targets for developing drugs including protein synthesis and protein kinases.
