Dr. McClelland is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington and holds joint appointments in the Department of Epidemiology and the Department of Global Health.  He has been a member of the University of Nairobi STD/HIV/Sexual and Reproductive Health Research Group since 1998 and is a Visiting Professor in the University of Nairobi’s Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology.  Dr. McClelland is Director of the Pwani Research Center, a collaborative infectious disease research and training field site of the University of Washington and the University of Nairobi, located in Mombasa, Kenya.  He has a broad background in infectious diseases and women’s reproductive health.  His research includes leadership of clinical trials and observational studies that leverage strong epidemiological and analytical foundations and collaborations with cutting edge basic science researchers.  Dr. McClelland is experienced in leading large multinational and multidisciplinary research teams conducting complex studies that emphasize rigorous science, strong collaborative relationships, population health impact, and training opportunities for early-stage Kenyan and US investigators.  He is co-PI of the University of Washington Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU), which includes clinical sites in Seattle, Kenya, Peru, and South Africa.  The VTEU is engaged in clinical trials including COVID-19 and other emerging infections, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory infections, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and enteric infections.
