Year One

Clinical Duties

Location: 11 months at Alaska Native Medical Center in Alaska or Indian Health Service on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Fellows will spend one month in Seattle taking a Global Health Leadership Course.

Outcomes

  • Improve clinical knowledge and physical exam skills
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of Alaska Native and Oglala Sioux health issues
  • Learn how to gain trust and acceptance by the local population
  • Incorporate oneself into the local culture and attend cultural events
  • Familiarize oneself to the structural violence that undermines health which leads to poorer health outcomes.
  • Identify mentor & project for 2nd year of fellowship
  • Optional: Pursue MPH coursework

Year Two

Research, Clinical Educator

Location: Fellows can choose to work and live for 11 months abroad in over 100 countries.

Outcomes

  • Strong foundation in research/clinical and medical education skills
  • Enhanced knowledge in Public Health/Health Systems Strengthening
  • Present final project in the form of a manuscript and/or presentation for a conference
  • Apply for global/rural health jobs
