Topics in Allergy and Immunology Teaching Series
Objectives
Weekly didactic presentations on various topics related to Allergy & Immunology (AI) such as asthma, pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, guidelines and treatment, as well as basic immunology, immunodeficiency, rhinitis, dermatitis, urticarial, food and drug allergy, and from recent journal articles will provide educational value for physicians and healthcare providers in the field to maintain competence and improve standards of care. Upon completion of this activity, attendees should be able to:
- Examine historical perspectives on the evolution of thinking about particular diseases as related to allergy.
- Establish a regional standard of practice in the files of allergy through review of evidence-based medicine.
- Evaluate medical literature critically and remain current in the medical literature of allergy and immunology and related fields.
Sessions
Fellow presents a topic (both basic and clinical) in at least one of the sessions. In other sessions, faculty and invited guest speakers give presentations or lead discussions of A&I journal articles.

UW Allergy and Immunology Didactic / Interactive Board Review
Sessions
Fellows and Faculty select topics from ABAI Review Books. Group discussions lead by Fellows and Dr. Altman, and other A&I faculty.

Allergy & Immunology Clinical Conferences (AICC) - Didactic Teaching Sessions
Sessions
The AICC consists of case presentations by the fellows to the allergy faculty team, and a brief discussion of inpatients and recent consults follow the case presentations.

Immunology Division Patient Presentation & Discussion (PPD) and Didactic Teaching Sessions
Sessions
The PPD conference is held as part of the bimonthly Immunology Divisional meeting. This consists of case presentations by the fellows to the four to six immunology attendings present, with the goal of developing rational and thoughtful differential diagnoses and linking them to the pathophysiology of the immune system. Brief discussions of inpatients and recent consults follow the case presentations.
There is also a monthly Immunology Didactic Session following one of the Wednesday Division Meetings at Building 1 at the Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute.

Sessions
This multidisciplinary clinical and teaching conference is designed to acquaint the fellow with the indications for hematopoetic cell transplant in the patient with primary immunodeficiency. Types of transplants, preparative regimens, transplant-related complications such as GVHD, and difficult clinical management issues related to transplant or gene therapy are also discussed.
Sites participating in the transplant protocols offered to patients with primary immunodeficiency disease include:

UW Biomedical Research Integrity Series and didactic/interactive sessions
Sessions
The biomedical research integrity covers the six core topics required by the Responsible Conduct of Research Code of the NIH: conflict of interest, responsible authorship, policies for handling misconduct, policies regarding the use of human and animal subjects, and data management.

Annual Department of Immunology Retreat
Sessions
A two-day retreat held annually that allows trainees and faculty to discuss scientific interests, present an update of their research, and share time socially. Selected faculty and trainees deliver oral presentations and trainees present posters in an informal setting.
