Program Overview

2025 ID Fellow Graduates

Welcome to the University of Washington Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program! We are delighted that you are considering a career in infectious diseases. Our infectious disease training program is among the oldest in the country with ID fellows training at the University of Washington since 1960. Every year, we have the privilege of recruiting and training incredible fellows from a variety of different educational programs. Over a two to four-year training experience, our fellows are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of infectious diseases through broad-based clinical training and clinical investigation.

"My time in the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at the University of Washington was both pleasant and rewarding. The clinical and research opportunities provided a comprehensive and enriching experience, allowing me to grow professionally and contribute meaningfully to caring for patients with infectious diseases. The supportive environment and the expertise of the faculty were invaluable in shaping my career. I highly recommend this program to anyone passionate about advancing their knowledge and skills in infectious diseases." -Chineme Nwaichi, MBBS, MS 2024 graduate

Fellows at Retreat

Why train at the University of Washington?

We pride ourselves on providing outstanding clinical training through diverse clinical opportunities at four hospitals, which include a catchment area covering Seattle, King County, Washington State, and the WWAMI region. Our division is one of the largest in the country, with over 100 faculty members who provide unparalleled opportunities to fellows.

Faculty members include internationally renowned leaders in sexual health research, HIV prevention and clinical care, respiratory viral infections, and infections in immunocompromised hosts. Additionally, our strong link to Public Health - Seattle & King County provides the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of infectious diseases, epidemiology, and public health.

Fellows can enroll in graduate programs during their fellowship, such as MPH and MS degrees at the UW School of Public Health, which complement their clinical and academic training. For those interested in a global health career, our program is closely linked with the UW Department of Global Health, which provides research and clinical opportunities with international partners.

Our fellows pursue projects in clinical investigation based on their areas of interest, and the division helps make scholarly activity a priority by supporting fellows in the presentation and publication of their research findings.

If you’re interested in a collegial and supportive environment in a thriving city in a beautiful part of the world, we welcome your application to the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program.

"One of the greatest aspects of this truly exceptional program is the people. I had the privilege of learning from trailblazers in the field of antimicrobial stewardship. Despite our division being huge, there is a strong sense of community that feels like a family. The mentorship committee at UW is outstanding. My mentorship family, "Chan Lab," consisting of the director of antimicrobial stewardship, the director of infection prevention, and the ID pharmacist, was incredibly dedicated, meeting with me at least weekly to discuss everything from research updates to job searches (sometimes digressing to food, travel, and raising kids). This supportive and nurturing environment made a significant impact on my professional development." - Hayato Miaka, MD, 2024 graduate
