Division Head

Anna Wald Dr. Thomas Hawn became the Interim Head of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2026.

Dr. Tom Hawn completed his MD and PhD at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington. He joined the Division faculty in 2005 and has since built an internationally recognized research program focused on the immunology and genetics of infectious diseases.

Dr. Hawn's research has focused on understanding the genetic and immunologic factors that influence human susceptibility to infection and using this knowledge to design more effective vaccines and therapies. His group defines and characterizes the cellular function of genetic polymorphisms in innate immune response genes and the mechanisms by which they regulate susceptibility to human infection, with the overall goal of elucidating novel therapeutic strategies, with a particular emphasis on tuberculosis. His work has also examined immune responses to Mycobacterium leprae, Pseudomonas, and Legionella pneumophila.

Teaching and mentoring have been a prominent part of his academic career. He has mentored numerous fellows, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior faculty and remains actively involved in the training of future physicians and scientists, receiving the University of Washington Department of Medicine Housestaff Research Mentorship Award in 2013. Dr. Hawn is Co-Director of the Kenya Tuberculosis Research and Training Program which supports Kenyan trainees. He holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Global Health and the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology and continues to care for patients through Harborview Medical Center.
