Division Head

Anna Wald Dr. Anna Wald  became the fourth Head of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases on 2017.

Dr. Anna Wald completed her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and internal medicine residency at Boston, Massachusetts. Subsequently, she worked at the AIDS Clinical Trial Unit at University of Washington in Seattle enrolling participants into studies of experimental HIV therapy.  In 1994, she completed fellowship in Infectious Diseases, working primarily in clinical virology, as well as an MPH in Epidemiology, and was appointed as junior faculty in the Division.

The focus of her research has been on herpes simplex virus infections, with an emphasis on natural history and development of novel antivirals and candidate vaccines. Dr. Wald directs the UW Virology Research Clinic, a clinic that is dedicated to the study of viral infections.  In the last several years, COVID-19 studies have become an important component of her research portfolio, as her research clinic was selected to join the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium as a Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit. Currently, her group continues to be involved in SARS -CoV-2 vaccine efforts.

Teaching and mentoring has been a prominent part of her academic career.  She developed and taught a course on vaccines at the School of Public Health, and has served as the chair of MPH committee for >30 trainees. She was the recipient of K24 Mentor Award from NIAID for 2 cycles.

Dr. Wald has a joint appointment with Department of Epidemiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, and Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Division at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. She cares for patients at Harborview Medical Center and at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
